When
the American
Revolution broke
out in 1775, the colonists weren’t fighting united under a single flag.
Instead, most regiments participating in the war for independence against the
British fought under their own flags. In June of 1775, the Second
Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to create the Continental Army—a
unified colonial fighting force—with the hopes of more organized battle against
its colonial oppressors. This led to the creation of what was, essentially, the
first “American” flag, the Continental Colors. (https://www.history.com/news/what-is-flag-day)
Does
this sound familiar? There are many conflicts in our country right now. COVID
19 and how to deal with it, Trump vs Biden, Democrats vs Republican, racism,
kneeling during the national anthem, and much more.
It saddens me to think that today, as in 1775 we are back to fighting under our own flags and not united under one.
It saddens me to think that today, as in 1775 we are back to fighting under our own flags and not united under one.
We
still are a country of the free and the brave.
We can
be united if we drop the walls and work together.
I’m
sure it wasn’t easy in 1775, and it isn’t without a struggle in 2020, but it’s
possible.
We can
bring down the barriers that separate us and love each other equally. It is up
to us, each and every one of us here in the United States to know in our hearts
most people are good and want good things for all.
I will
proudly display my flag today. Not without challenge or without recognition
that some are hurting and our country is not completely united, but proudly
with the hope that as our forefathers did in 1775 so can we in 2020.
We can come
together, under one flag. United and free. Loving and thankful. Kind and
understanding.
Happy
Flag Day America!Peggy
